Dornoch Cathedral

Dornoch Cathedral, Sutherland

Taking around fifteen years to build, Dornoch Cathedral heard its first service in 1239AD. Built by Gilbert de Moravia, the then Bishop of Caithness, it was burned in 1570 during a clan feud. Restored in the nineteenth century by the Duchess of Sutherland and her estate architect Alexander Coupar, its design was simplified at that time to the shape of a crucifix. The tower is all that remains of the original.
