Dornoch High Street & Dornoch Cathedral

Dornoch High Street, Sutherland

Dornoch Cathedral, Sutherland

Print 1 - Dornoch High Street

The Royal Burgh of Dornoch sits on the northern shores of the Dornoch Firth on a promontory fringed by golden sands. It has long been a popular holiday destination and today offers a championship golf course amongst historical attractions like its thirteenth century cathedral and nineteenth century gaol. Once the administrative capital of Sutherland, Dornoch retains its old-world charm.

Print 2 - Dornoch Cathedral

Taking around fifteen years to build, Dornoch Cathedral heard its first service in 1239AD. Built by Gilbert de Moravia, the then Bishop of Caithness, it was burned in 1570 during a clan feud. Restored in the nineteenth century by the Duchess of Sutherland and her estate architect Alexander Coupar, its design was simplified at that time to the shape of a crucifix. The tower is all that remains of the original. SAVE!
